Summary

This bill would pause U.S. production of the one-cent coin for 10 years while keeping the penny legal tender. Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

Pennies remain legal tender nationwide

If enacted, one-cent coins would remain legal tender for all debts, taxes, fees, and charges. You could still use pennies, no matter the mint date. This would take effect when the bill is enacted.

Pause on minting pennies for 10 years

If enacted, the Treasury would stop making new one-cent coins for 10 years starting on enactment. The Mint could still make pennies only for coin collectors, and those would be sold under the usual collector-coin rules. Sales of those collector pennies would have to cover all costs to make them. Over time, households and businesses could see fewer pennies in circulation.
