Introduced
Summary
Authorizes the President to award the Medal of Honor to Thomas Helmut Griffin despite statutory time limits on medal awards. The bill ties that authorization to Griffin's actions from March 1–3, 1969, while serving as a U.S. Army captain and senior advisor to the 4/5 Infantry Battalion, Army of the Republic of Vietnam. Griffin is credited with repeatedly exposing himself about 20 times to heavy enemy fire to lead his battalion, direct gunships and artillery strikes, assault and neutralize a machine-gun bunker, carry multiple wounded to safety, and continue fighting after being wounded three times. His leadership is reported to have reduced the enemy regiment's fighting capacity, resulted in 93 enemy deaths, and saved over 300 allied soldiers.
