Extending WIC for New Moms Act

Sponsored By: Representative McBath, Lucy [D-GA-6]

Introduced

Summary

Extend WIC postpartum and breastfeeding eligibility to 24 months. This bill would let new mothers get Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children support for a longer postpartum period and require the Secretary of Agriculture to report on program effects.

Show full summary
  • Families: Postpartum individuals could receive WIC through 24 months after birth instead of 6 months. This provides more months of food and nutrition support during early parenthood.
  • Breastfeeding parents: WIC breastfeeding support would cover up to 24 months after birth instead of the current 1 year. That aims to support continued breastfeeding.
  • Oversight and data: The Secretary of Agriculture must submit a report to Congress within 2 years evaluating maternal and infant health outcomes, breastfeeding rates, racial and ethnic disparities, family experiences, and other relevant information.
  • Definition: The bill defines "postpartum" as the 1-year period beginning on the last day of the pregnancy.

More WIC help for new moms

If enacted, this would let people stay on WIC up to 24 months after birth instead of the current six months. It would also extend WIC breastfeeding supports from 1 year after birth to 24 months. The bill defines "postpartum" as the 1-year period beginning on the last day of the pregnancy, which may affect how the new 24-month language applies in practice. The Secretary of Agriculture would have to report to Congress within two years on health outcomes, breastfeeding rates, racial and ethnic disparities, and family experiences under these changes.
