HR9047119th Congress

Arlington National Cemetery Viewshed Protection Act

Sponsored By: Representative Beyer, Donald S. [D-VA-8]

Introduced

Summary

Bans building and federal funding of triumphal arches in Lady Bird Johnson Park and caps arch height on National Capital Region National Park Service land at 50 feet. This bill would bar establishing or constructing a triumphal arch in Lady Bird Johnson Park in the District of Columbia and would prohibit using Federal funds for that activity in the park regardless of other law or funding source. It would also prevent any triumphal arch taller than 50 feet on land administered by the National Capital Region Office of the National Park Service unless Congress expressly authorizes an exception.

Show full summary
  • Park visitors and neighbors would not see new triumphal arches in Lady Bird Johnson Park because the bill would bar their construction and any use of Federal funds there.
  • National Park Service staff in the National Capital Region would be barred from approving arches over 50 feet on land they manage unless Congress gives explicit permission.
  • Developers or sponsors could not rely on Federal funding to build an arch in the park and could not circumvent the 50-foot cap through other funding sources.
  • The bill clarifies terms by defining Lady Bird Johnson Park as the former Columbia Island and defining a triumphal arch as a monumental structure with at least one freestanding archway or a substantially similar structure.

The bill defines a "triumphal arch" as a monumental structure with at least one freestanding archway or a substantially similar structure.
