Summary

Bring national attention to uterine fibroids and the racial disparities in who they affect. The resolution would support July as Uterine Fibroids Awareness Month, recognize the need for more research and better treatment and care options, and encourage the President to issue a proclamation calling for awareness and education. Fibroids can cause pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, reproductive problems, and reduced quality of life. About 30% of women have fibroids by age 35 and 80% by age 50. Incidence is roughly three times higher for Black women and about twice as high for Hispanic women. More than 200,000 hysterectomies treat fibroids each year and annual U.S. costs are estimated in the billions.
