Surveyors can use reference monuments
Beginning August 12, 2026, professional land surveyors can set one or more reference monuments when standard markers cannot be set. This covers steep slopes, water or marsh, existing structures, or unsafe spots on traveled roads in public rights-of-way. It also applies to subdivision monumentation. If a referendum petition is filed, these changes take effect only if voters approve them in November 2026 and on the governor’s declaration date.
Electronic filing for monument records
Beginning August 12, 2026, professional land surveyors must submit certain monument records electronically to the board. This applies when a used monument is not well described in an existing record and when you establish, restore, or rehabilitate public land survey corners, including section, quarter, or sixteenth corners. County clerks can keep monument records electronically and must index them when received. The board cannot require paper-only filing. If a referendum petition is filed, these changes take effect only if voters approve them in November 2026 and on the governor’s declaration date.
