Easier Colorado licenses for out-of-state teachers

Beginning August 12, 2026, Colorado issues a professional teacher license to out-of-state teachers who have at least three years of successful, evaluated teaching in the past seven years and submit proof on department forms. If you apply for an initial Colorado license and Colorado has reciprocity with your state or country, you do not have to show Colorado professional competencies if you have three or more years of teaching there. You must still meet all other Colorado license rules and be qualified to teach in that place.

Fast 30-day licenses for compact-state teachers

Beginning August 12, 2026, Colorado signs agreements with each state that joins the Interstate Teacher Mobility Compact. The Department must issue an initial license within 30 days of a complete application if you hold an unencumbered equivalent license from a compact state, are not under discipline or investigation, and pass a Colorado criminal history check. The Department assigns Colorado endorsement areas that match your out-of-state license and publishes a yearly table showing these matches. Colorado cannot add extra coursework, exams, or program steps before the initial license, but it may require coursework or program completions when you renew. This temporary fast-track ends once Colorado starts issuing licenses directly under compact rules and files notice.
