Epilepsy guidance for death certifiers

Beginning July 1, 2027, coroners, medical examiners, and other death certifiers must know the latest epilepsy guidance. The guidance must come from a reputable national group or the National Association of Medical Examiners. By June 1, 2027, the health department emails all Colorado Vital Events System users about this rule. The law defines who counts as a death certification professional and what “department” means, so duties are clear.

List epilepsy on SUDEP certificates

Beginning August 12, 2026, if a death is consistent with known or suspected sudden unexpected death in epilepsy, the death certificate must note epilepsy as a contributing or suspected cause. Certifiers must follow the latest recommendations from a reputable national group or the National Association of Medical Examiners. The health department may post online guidance to help clinicians and certifiers with epilepsy-related deaths, including SUDEP.
