Ballot rules after non-major-party candidates die

Louisiana sets ballot rules for qualified candidates who are not affiliated with a major political party. The rules apply when a candidate dies after qualifying closes but before polls close on general election day. Officials must leave the deceased candidate’s name off the general election ballot. If ballots already include the name, votes for that candidate are void and cannot count for any purpose.

Unopposed major-party candidates win special elections

In Louisiana special elections to fill an unfinished term, a major-party candidate can be declared elected without a general election. The candidate must qualify for the general election under the law’s regular or special-election provisions. No other candidates can remain for that general election. Officials must then formally certify the candidate as elected.
