The Acadiana Regional Juvenile Justice District board must give every parish government written notice at least 30 days before covered meetings. This applies to meetings where the board may consider tax, debt, or bond matters. Every board member must approve a proposed district tax levy before it can go on the ballot. Each parish government must then approve it through a written resolution or another authorized form. These rules do not themselves impose or change a household tax.
The law establishes an 11-member commission to manage the Acadiana Regional Juvenile Justice District. For eight parish seats, commissioners must be qualified voters living in the parish, with initial four-year terms. Appointments are made jointly by the local chief judge, district attorney, sheriff, and a parish president. The president's participation depends on parish population in the most recent federal census taken every 10 years. Population ranges are Acadia: 57,501–57,999; Allen: 22,501–22,999; Evangeline: 32,301–32,999; and Iberia: 69,001–69,999. The remaining ranges are Jefferson Davis: 32,201–32,299; St. Landry: 82,001–82,999; St. Martin: 51,501–51,999; and St. Mary: 49,001–49,999. Missing two consecutive meetings is grounds for removing an appointed member. After the appointing party receives notice, the seat is vacant and must be filled within 90 days.
