Longer temporary appointments for fire and police

Louisiana municipalities, parishes, and fire protection districts can make provisional appointments of qualified people for up to 90 days, up from 60. Covered jobs include entry-level firefighters, police officers, jailers, secretaries to the chief, and departmental records clerks. Also covered are entry-level jobs whose main duty is operating and maintaining fire or police radio, alarm, or signal systems. Appointments cannot exceed 90 days, and successive provisional appointments in these classes remain prohibited. These temporary appointments do not give workers permanent civil service status.
