New pay rules for Louisiana examiners

The law changes pay rules for Louisiana’s state examiner and deputy state examiner overseeing municipal fire and police civil service. Their oversight covers municipalities with populations from 13,000 to 250,000. The state examiner’s pay range is no longer tied to the deputy director of state civil service’s range. The deputy examiner’s range is no longer fixed two levels below that range. The State Civil Service Commission sets the examiner’s salary under its uniform pay plan; the examiner sets the deputy’s salary under that plan. The law gives no salary amounts or guaranteed raises or cuts. Both officers must work full-time, be Louisiana residents and qualified voters, and have civil service personnel, job classification, or employment-testing experience. Both receive travel and living expenses while away from home on official business. The examiner appoints, supervises, and can dismiss the deputy, who can exercise the examiner’s authority and duties.
