Beginning January 1, 2026, Louisiana adjusts its motor vehicle dealer fee cap each year from a $425 base. Sellers can charge this separate fee on retail sales, including financed purchases. It covers credit checks, legal compliance, lien paperwork, and other title-related work. The cap equals the lower of two amounts: $425 adjusted for cumulative consumer price changes since 2024, or the prior year's cap increased by 3%. The price measure is the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers, or its replacement, using annual averages of unadjusted monthly values. If that index falls year over year, the cap stays unchanged. The state rounds to the nearest dollar, with 50 cents rounded up. The Division of Administration calculates the cap, obtains legislative auditor verification, and sends it to the Louisiana Motor Vehicle Commission by February 1 each year. The commission publishes it online. Buyers can pay more as the cap rises, but sellers do not have to charge the maximum.
