Louisiana public schools must offer mental health assessments each school year to students in grades 3 through 12. A parent or legal guardian must approve the assessment each year; students are not required to participate. A Louisiana-licensed behavioral health provider must conduct it, at no cost to the local school board. Schools must offer assessments within the school year, during the first semester when feasible. The principal or a designee chooses the schedule and location. Schools must report screening counts by grade to the state Department of Education at each school year's end. The law provides access to an assessment, not a right to further treatment.
