Drivers face steeper road-zone penalties

Drivers who speed or breach construction or utility work zones face fines of $500 to $1,000. Construction, maintenance, or repair must be underway, with workers on site. Construction zones must have temporary traffic control devices; active utility work zones must have temporary traffic control signs. Traffic violations in designated highway safety corridors carry separate penalties: $750 to $1,000, up to 30 days in jail, or both. A different penalty applies when another law specifically provides one.
