Temporary Saturday tax votes for qualifying towns

The law creates a temporary option for Louisiana municipalities to hold sales and use tax elections on otherwise unavailable Saturdays. Only municipalities with more than 15,000 and fewer than 16,000 people qualify, based on the latest federal decennial census. The tax must expire before an election can be called on a regular legal date. Approval requires two-thirds of the State Bond Commission's total membership, plus the governor and secretary of state. The option is repealed effective December 31, 2025, restoring the regular election-date rules. The law also requires local governing authorities to call tax elections when written petitions have signatures from one-fourth of qualified voters. It does not itself extend a tax or change its rate.
