East Baton Rouge can fund public defenders

East Baton Rouge Parish can pay at least $1 million from its general fund to support its district public defender’s office. The office is entitled to an allowance for staff salaries and official expenses, including supplies, phones, transportation, travel, postage, and lodging. Parish money adds to state public defender funding and cannot replace it. The parish funding authorization ends July 1, 2028. This supports legal help for people who cannot afford a lawyer, rather than providing household payments.
