More suicide prevention help for Louisiana students

Louisiana public colleges and universities must offer students trained mental health support 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Support focuses on preventing suicides and attempts and can be on campus, by phone, or through other remote means. Schools must put 988 and its call-or-text explanation on websites and student ID cards, plus available local and state hotlines. All entering students—including full-time, part-time, undergraduate, graduate, professional, and transfer students—must receive information about mental health services, suicide prevention services, and early suicide warning signs. Schools can use presentations, online programs, or videos, but cannot provide this information only on paper.

Colleges must report suicide assessments anonymously

Louisiana public colleges and universities must create and use systems to collect and report data on their suicide risk assessments. Data must include annual assessment totals and student demographics, including race, ethnicity, and gender. Schools must also count students referred to mental health services because of these assessments. All collected and reported data must be grouped together and must not identify individual students.
