Armed security officers gain limited lawsuit protection

Louisiana law extends protection from civil liability to qualified armed security officers acting within their authority. Officers must complete required training and hold an armed registration card from the Louisiana State Board of Private Security Examiners. The protection covers injury, death, or loss caused by firing a gun in justified force or self-defense. The perpetrator must be wielding a dangerous weapon, as defined by state law, when the officer injures them. The law bars lawsuits for those harms by the perpetrator, their survivors, or their heirs.
