Louisiana prosecutor minimums rise, Orleans minimum falls

The law raises minimum assistant district attorney staffing in 30 Louisiana judicial districts; other district minimums stay unchanged. The largest increases are in the Nineteenth District, from 55 to 71, and the Twenty-Second, from 30 to 44. Orleans Parish's minimum falls from 83 to 73. Each district attorney must appoint a first assistant and any additional assistants needed to meet the staffing minimum. The reported added general fund spending is $3.411 million. Staffing changes take effect when a law with a specific appropriation to carry them out takes effect. Changes not approved by the Governor's Advisory and Review Commission on April 12, 2026, also require its recommendation. That recommendation must confirm that the changes meet applicable guidelines in its report to the governor and Louisiana Legislature.
