Beginning March 20, 2024, New Jersey municipalities can pass an ordinance letting their clerk submit affordable housing statements. Projects must fit the municipality’s fair share plan and housing element, approved by a court or state agency. The clerk’s support statement can meet the local support requirement for New Jersey Affordable Housing Trust Fund grants or loans. For below-market rental housing loans, the statement must say the municipality needs the project. This simplifies paperwork but does not guarantee funding or housing for residents.
