Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 2 costs, 1 mixed.

New rules to run for sheriff

The law tightens who can run for county sheriff, starting November 1, 2025. You must be 25 or older, have a high school education, and have lived in Oklahoma for 2 years. You must be a county voter for the 6 months before filing, with your party or as an Independent. You also need 4+ years as a full-time, certified peace officer (over 25 paid hours weekly with core duties like enforcing laws and serving warrants). You must file proof of your peace officer or veteran service. Incumbents and prior sheriffs are exempt from these new rules.

Veterans can count military police service

Veterans who served as military police can count four or more years of that service toward the 4-year experience to run for sheriff. You must show your DD Form 214 when you file. This applies starting November 1, 2025.

New training required for sheriffs

Newly elected or appointed county sheriffs must finish a sheriff administrative school within 12 months. The school is developed by the Oklahoma Sheriffs' Association and approved by the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET). If you do not finish on time, you cannot get CLEET certification; if you had it, it is revoked. This rule starts November 1, 2025.

All changes start November 1, 2025

All parts of this law take effect November 1, 2025. Rules and requirements in this act start on that date.
