Starting July 1, 2026, every Oklahoma school district teaches research-based lessons each year on fentanyl and drug poisoning for grades 6–12. Lessons must cover suicide prevention, preventing fentanyl abuse and addiction, local school and community resources, and health facts about youth fentanyl use and poisoning. This teaching is part of the district's substance abuse curriculum. If a district offers a health class in grades 6–12, the drug unit must include fentanyl awareness.
Starting July 1, 2026, the State Board of Education sets fentanyl awareness standards and adds them to health standards for grades 6–12. The State Department of Education provides resources to help schools and teachers deliver these lessons. Schools may use approved groups to teach, including colleges, libraries, community groups, religious groups, local health agencies, and organizations that employ mental health professionals.
