Six weeks paid maternity leave for educators

Beginning November 1, 2025, full‑time teachers and classroom staff in public school districts, technology centers, Rehabilitation Services, Corrections, and the Office of Juvenile Affairs get six weeks of paid maternity leave right after birth. You must have worked for the same employer at least one year and 1,250 hours in the prior 12 months. This paid time is on top of your pregnancy sick leave. You may use your accrued sick leave to add up to six more weeks; with a doctor’s written note, leave can total up to 12 weeks, and FMLA time runs at the same time. If you extend with sick leave, you must give FMLA notice, and the maternity leave rules override general teacher leave minimums when they conflict.

State funding and rules for maternity leave

Starting November 1, 2025, the state funds a Public School Paid Maternity Leave Revolving Fund each year. If lawmakers do not provide enough money, the State Board of Education must use its own appropriation to fully pay the leave. State education, career tech, rehabilitation, corrections, and juvenile affairs boards may write rules to run the program.
