Tougher penalties for assaulting on-duty officers

Beginning November 1, 2025, aggravated assault and battery on listed on-duty law officers is a felony when done knowingly and without justifiable or excusable cause. It covers police, sheriffs and deputies, highway patrol, corrections staff, and other state peace officers. The crime carries up to life in prison and a fine up to $1,000. If the attack causes maiming, the sentence is 5 years to life and a fine up to $5,000. The law also treats trying to take an officer's gun and strangulation as aggravated assault. For the maiming level, the offender knows or should reasonably know the victim is an officer who is on duty.
