New local election filing deadlines

Local bodies that want their election on the same day as a state or federal election must file the calling resolution at least 75 days before the date. If a three-day candidate filing is required, it must start no later than 10 days after that deadline. Cities may set their filing period on the same dates as the state or federal filing period for that ballot. For special elections to fill a vacancy, the three-day filing window must begin no more than 20 days after the resolution filing date. These timing rules apply to elections held after January 1, 2026.

Standard election dates across Oklahoma

County-run elections can only happen on Tuesdays. Elections to fill offices are limited to set dates: the second Tuesday of February; the first Tuesday of April; any statewide or federal election day in even years; the third Tuesday of June in odd years; the fourth Tuesday of August in odd years; and, for vacancy specials, the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. Non-office elections may use specific Tuesdays. In odd years, allowed dates include the second Tuesday of January, February, May, June, July, August, September, October, and November; the first Tuesday of March and April; and the second Tuesday of December. In even years, allowed dates include the second Tuesday of January and February, the first Tuesday in March and April, the third Tuesday of June, the fourth Tuesday of August, and the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November, starting December 2025 and every four years after. Cities over 250,000 people get one extra local option. If an election date lands on a state holiday, it moves to the next Tuesday. If a candidate filing day falls on a weekend or state holiday, it moves to the next business day. The Governor may also call special elections on extra listed Tuesdays for U.S. House or state legislative vacancies, or during a declared emergency; these include the second Tuesday of January, the first Tuesday of March, and certain Tuesdays in May, July, September, October, and December. These rules apply to elections held after January 1, 2026.

When the new election rules start

The law takes effect November 1, 2025. The new scheduling and filing rules govern elections held after January 1, 2026.
