Counties can remove board appointees

A county legislative body can remove a member of any appointed board or commission. Removal requires a two-thirds (2/3) vote and a recommendation from the appointing authority. The member must get at least five (5) business days’ notice of the meeting for the vote. This power applies even if a charter, resolution, or other law says otherwise, but not in counties with a removal rule that existed before this law. It also does not apply to a person appointed to fill a vacancy in the Tennessee General Assembly. The law takes effect immediately.
