Beginning September 1, 2025, licensed athletic trainers may perform dry needling. They may also use heat, light, sound, cold, electricity, or mechanical devices to treat athletic injuries. Trainers practice under a physician’s referral or prescription. Dry needling by trainers is not treated as acupuncture.
Beginning September 1, 2025, trainers who do dry needling must meet board-set competency and training rules. You must be competent in any method you use and keep proof the board accepts. The law requires at least 50 hours of foundational study and at least 24 hours of dry needling-specific training. You must complete any training and certification the board requires. The board approves qualifying schools and can make rules to run this program.
