Beginning July 1, 2025, “employer” includes Tennessee cities, counties, metro governments, and other local governments that employ firefighters, police, or EMS. It also includes the state and its agencies when they employ law enforcement officers. These public employers must follow the PTSD rules for these workers.
Beginning July 1, 2025, these PTSD rules cover firefighters, law enforcement officers, and emergency medical responders (EMTs and paramedics). The law adds clear definitions of both groups so there is no doubt who is included. It also replaces wording that only named firefighters and removes “fire department,” so the same rules apply across police and EMS too.
