Courts set rules for e-filing

Beginning January 1, 2026, Tennessee courts may let you file and send court papers electronically. The Tennessee Supreme Court is asked to set rules on document types, signatures, fees, and when a filing counts. Each court’s procedures must follow those rules and this law.

State offices accept electronic documents

Beginning January 1, 2026, all state executive offices must accept electronic versions of any document that used to be sent by fax. Electronic transmission means a digital message you can keep, retrieve, and print. Fax is not an electronic transmission. Many laws now use “electronic transmission” instead of “fax” or “email.” This change updates how you send documents, not who qualifies or the fees.

Request mail ballot electronically

Beginning January 1, 2026, you may request a mail ballot by electronic transmission or by mail. Your request must be in writing over your signature, and include a scanned signature if sent electronically. County election offices no longer must keep a fax machine for these requests.
