Beginning January 1, 2026, TennCare can require each managed care plan to cover doctor‑prescribed, medically necessary care for PANDAS and PANS. This applies to group plans delivered, issued, amended, or renewed in Tennessee on or after that date. Covered care can include antibiotics, medicines, behavior therapy, immune‑modulating drugs, plasma exchange, and IVIG. Plans cannot charge higher copays, deductibles, or coinsurance than for similar services. Urgent prior authorizations must be handled on time under state insurance rules.
Tennessee health plans may not deny or delay medically necessary PANDAS or PANS care just because you had past treatment or a different diagnosis name, like autoimmune encephalopathy. Insurers can ask for treatment notes and the expected length and outcomes, and may consider expert treatment guidelines. Until national codes exist, doctors must bill these conditions as “autoimmune encephalitis.” When new codes are created, those codes can be used and the law’s protections still apply.
