Beginning July 1, 2025, you do not commit criminal impersonation just for operating an antique emergency vehicle when you follow the event, light, and siren rules. This protection applies only if the vehicle is registered as an antique and you use era-correct equipment with written approval, keep the approval with you, and limit use to events, parades, or private property with permission.
Beginning July 1, 2025, the law lets antique emergency vehicles be used at community and school events and driven to and from them. Privately owned antiques registered as such can show red, white, or blue era-correct flashing lights and use era-correct bells or sirens only with written permission from the local police or fire chief. You must keep the written authorization in the vehicle and show it to an officer on request. Lights and sirens may run only when the vehicle is stopped at an event on public property, during an organized parade or ceremony on public roads, or on private property with the owner’s permission. Blue or blue-and-red lights are allowed only on antique law enforcement vehicles. This applies to antique ambulances, fire vehicles, and police vehicles that meet Tennessee’s antique criteria.
