Beginning July 1, 2025, teachers at Tennessee state special schools earn and use leave the same as public school teachers. They also get paid family leave under the state’s paid family leave law. You count as a teacher if you are licensed by the State Board and employed at a state special school. The chief administrator and workers already treated as state employees for leave are not included.
The Department of Education sets pay and job terms for state special school staff. If the local district where your school is located raises its salary schedule by a percent, your school’s schedule must rise by the same percent. When the Legislature funds raises or bonuses for LEA or charter teachers, the Department must spend an equal amount for teachers and licensed staff at state special schools. These rules begin July 1, 2025 and apply to the 2025–2026 school year and after.
