During a public health emergency, natural disaster, or other temporary office closure, your county clerk can ask a neighboring county to handle vehicle registrations and renewals for a set time. The request must be in writing and state the time period. The helping clerk cannot collect any county motor vehicle privilege tax. The helping clerk must collect local sales and use tax at the helper county’s rate and send it to the state; the state allocates those proceeds to the helping county after written notice due by the tax remittance date. Taxes are not refunded to offset rate differences between counties. When you use the helping clerk, you pay a $2.50 fee for each set of plates and registration certificates, including transfers and surrenders.
