Beginning January 1, 2026, Tennessee treats some out-of-state driver licenses as invalid to drive here. They are license classes another state gives only to people without lawful presence and that are clearly marked or look different. This includes permits that let you drive. The Department of Safety must post a list of these classes by December 1, 2025 and keep it updated. Nonresident driving privileges apply only if your license is not one of these. Driving in Tennessee with one of these invalid licenses is a Class B misdemeanor.
