Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, every public school with grades 6–12 teaches internet and social media safety using the state guidance. Parents can excuse a student from part or all lessons with a written request. Send partial requests to the teacher or principal; full requests go to the principal. A student who completes approved alternative lessons does not get a grade penalty.
Starting with the 2025–2026 school year, students cannot use social media on school internet unless a teacher allows it for class. Starting July 1, 2025, schools must filter to age‑appropriate content, protect email and chat, and block sites or apps that do not protect student personal information.
The Department of Education must create grades 6–12 social media and internet safety guidance by January 1, 2026, and keep it updated. The guidance must cover time management, mental health harms and addiction, how information spreads and can manipulate behavior, and that posts can be permanent. It must teach safe use, like not oversharing, spotting cyberbullying, predators, and human trafficking signs, reporting concerns, and checking AI content and misinformation. The guidance may mention benefits of social media only for career and resume building, sharing with family and friends, and safely connecting with people with similar interests.
