Starting July 1, 2025, for the 2025–26 school year and after, Tennessee public schools and charters must ban student use of wireless devices during class. This covers phones, tablets, laptops, and gaming devices. Teachers can allow devices for lessons. Students may use devices in an emergency, to manage health, or if listed in an IEP, 504 plan, or learning plan, including as assistive tech. Schools must keep an emergency contact process for parents and post the policy on their website.
Starting July 1, 2025, a school's discipline code can let a teacher take and hold a student's device for instructional time. This applies only when the student breaks the school's device rule. It gives teachers a tool to enforce the policy during class.
