Beginning January 1, 2027, paid leave is capped at six workweeks in any 12‑month period. This one cap covers birth, adoption, foster placement, or a family member’s serious health condition. You may take leave intermittently or on a reduced schedule, as allowed by the federal Family and Medical Leave Act. Leave for birth, adoption, or foster placement must be used within 12 months of that event.
Beginning January 1, 2027, eligible Tennessee state employees can use paid leave for foster placement of a minor child. A foster parent is someone with a child placed by the Department of Children’s Services for foster care, not respite or adoption. You must stop using this foster‑placement leave when the child is no longer placed in your home or custody.
