Beginning July 1, 2025, Tennessee tightens sentencing for certain violent crimes. Courts cannot give probation to people convicted of a listed set of offenses, including aggravated assault when a firearm is shot from inside a motor vehicle. For that aggravated assault, there is no release eligibility; the person must serve 100% of the sentence. People can still earn credits, but they only affect privileges or security levels, not time served. Probation remains generally limited to sentences of ten years or less, but these listed crimes are excluded.
Starting July 1, 2025, Tennessee broadens what counts as a machine gun. It includes any gun that can fire more than two shots automatically with one trigger pull. Parts or devices made to convert a gun to fire automatically also count as machine guns. The law also adds firearm and handgun ammunition to items covered in certain possession rules. Makers, sellers, and owners of these guns, parts, or ammo face greater criminal exposure.
