Beginning July 1, 2025, it is a crime to post someone’s phone number or home address on a public website with intent to cause harm or a threat of harm to that person or a family or household member. The default penalty is a Class B misdemeanor. It becomes a Class A misdemeanor if the posting leads to harm, defined as bodily injury or property damage. This law does not apply to public servants who post information as part of their official duties when the posting is required by or follows state or federal law.
Beginning July 1, 2025, it is a crime to threaten an act of mass violence by any means of communication when the threat makes someone reasonably expect it will happen. Mass violence means an act likely to cause serious injury or death to four or more people. The default penalty is a Class E felony. It becomes a Class D felony if the threat targets a school, house of worship, or government property, or happens at a live event; if the person has prior convictions for similar offenses; or if the person takes clear steps to carry it out, like getting materials, planning, or doing surveillance. Courts can also order the offender to pay restitution for costs from the disruption the threat caused.
