All county wheel tax money, except the clerk’s $1 fees, first goes into the Fayette County general fund. Each year, the county can use it for regular needs, move it to the capital projects fund for school or other county buildings, or move it to the debt service fund to pay principal and interest. The clerk reports collections monthly to the county trustee. The county commission sets the sticker design, and the county pays to produce the stickers from the general fund.
When you register or renew a car in Fayette County, you must also buy the county vehicle license. The clerk cannot issue your state plate unless you buy the county license at the same time. You must put the county sticker or decal on your state plate. The county license follows the same proration rules as the state registration. You pay a $1 fee when the county license sticker is issued. If your licensed vehicle is sold, traded, demolished, destroyed, or changes owners, you can get a replacement sticker for $1.
This law only takes effect in Fayette County if the county legislative body approves it by a two-thirds vote. The presiding officer must announce the result and certify it to the secretary of state.
