4 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 2 costs, 1 mixed.
The board must choose a Chairperson and a Secretary from its members. The board is elected under Tennessee’s general election laws and has authority to hire elementary and middle school teachers, set their pay, and manage school buildings, grounds, and property.
These changes take effect only if the Wilson County legislative body approves them by a two-thirds vote and certifies the result to the secretary of state. The rule allowing the county to approve or reject is effective now.
To run for the board, you must be a resident or citizen of the district, be older than 25, and have lived there for more than one year before the election. No member may serve more than two terms.
The law sets a five-member school board, not three, with a quorum of three. The district must create five districts with equal population and send the map to the Wilson County Election Commission by September 1, 2025. Voters in each district elect one member in the regular August election, and winners take office on September 1. Terms are four years and staggered: odd-numbered seats expire together and even-numbered seats expire together. For the first cycle, odd-numbered seats serve two years and even-numbered seats serve four, and current members finish their terms. If a seat becomes vacant, the board names a replacement to serve until the next general biennial August election.
