The Town sets pay by ordinance, and pay cannot change during a term. Outgoing officials are paid through the end of the election month. New officials start pay on the first day of the next month. The Mayor, Aldermen, and Town Attorney can be reimbursed for actual work expenses. Current officials keep their full term and salary until the term ends.
If a federal census shows 18,000 or more people, the Board may add a sixth alderman. The new seat is position six and takes effect at the next regular town election.
Town elections are nonpartisan and happen in November of even years. Seats are numbered and elected at-large, one winner per seat. Ties are decided by the current board with a majority vote. In November 2026, voters choose positions 1–3 for four-year terms. In November 2028, voters choose the Mayor and positions 4–5 for four-year terms. Terms start after county certification, on the first business day of the next month.
These changes only take effect after a two-thirds vote by the Town’s legislative body. The presiding officer announces and certifies the result to the Secretary of State. The act is effective only for the approval vote itself until the Town adopts it.
To run for Mayor or Alderman, you must be a qualified voter. You must have lived in town at least one year. If you moved here less than a year ago, you cannot file. Before taking office, you must take the set oath to obey the law and constitutions.
