Beginning July 1, 2026, “child trafficking” means a human trafficking offense when the victim is under 18. Schools use this meaning when teaching prevention. The law also updates education code wording by deleting an old subdivision and a phrase about child victims to match the new definition.
Beginning July 1, 2026, for the 2026–27 school year and after, all Tennessee public schools teach child trafficking prevention and awareness in K–12 health classes. Lessons must be age-appropriate and build each year, using state board health standards. Districts and charter schools may use qualified healthcare professionals or social workers who meet the state’s family life teaching rules. Each local board and charter governing body adopts an implementation plan by August 1, 2026. Schools provide the plan to the Department of Education if the commissioner asks.
