Prisons must treat non-opioid pain meds fairly

Beginning January 1, 2027, the Department of Correction must not treat FDA‑approved non‑opioid pain drugs worse than opioids on its prison drug list. This rule applies even if the department has not yet reviewed the drug for the list. It also applies to medicines provided by the department’s healthcare contractors. The department can still prefer one opioid over another, or one non‑opioid over another. The law also lets the department create and change the prison drug formulary.
