Beginning with the 2026-2027 school year, Tennessee public and charter schools recognize November 7 as Victims of Communism Day. High school world history and geography classes must provide at least 45 minutes on how people suffered under communist regimes—covering poverty, starvation, migration, systemized lethal violence, and suppression of speech. The lesson must tie to at least one example: Mao Zedong and the Cultural Revolution; Joseph Stalin and the Soviet system; Fidel Castro and the Cuban Revolution; Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge; or Nicolás Maduro and the Chavismo movement. If November 7 is not a class day for that course, the lesson happens on the next class day.
