The commission must recommend at least one civics video to the State Board by February 1, 2027. The commission cannot make the video or ask anyone to make it. The State Board must approve at least one video by July 1, 2027. Any approved video must be historically accurate, include no political advocacy, cover the Declaration’s preamble and the meaning of “We hold these truths to be self-evident…,” and explain the founders’ religious affiliation and moral beliefs tied to the Articles of Confederation and the Constitutional Convention. The law treats the video as a supplemental instructional material.
Beginning with the 2027–2028 school year, Tennessee public schools must show a State Board–approved civics video. It is shown at least once in grades 6–8 and once in grades 9–12. Schools present it as part of social studies. If your child is in those grades, they will see the video at least once in middle school and once in high school.
