Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.

Voters elect highway supervisor every four years

Weakley County voters elect the County Highway Supervisor. Elections are in August 2026 and every four years after, with a majority needed to win. The current supervisor stays in office until their term ends. These election rules apply after the county approves the act by a two‑thirds vote and certifies the result.

Qualifications and pay for Highway Supervisor

Candidates must be U.S. citizens, at least 25, and have lived in Tennessee and Weakley County for two years. They must have at least a high school diploma or GED. They must also show either an engineering degree plus two years’ highway experience or a Tennessee engineering license, four years of supervisory highway work, or an equivalent mix. Proof of education or experience must be filed as state law requires. The Supervisor’s salary is set by general law, not by this act. These rules take effect after a two‑thirds county approval and certification.

Highway Supervisor office needs local approval

The law creates a County Highway Supervisor to run Weakley County’s highway department. The Supervisor oversees building and upkeep of county roads, highways, and bridges under state highway law. These changes take effect only after the county legislative body approves the act by a two‑thirds vote. The presiding officer must proclaim the result and certify it to the Tennessee Secretary of State. The law is effective now only to let the county approve or reject it.
