3 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 1 costs, 2 mixed.

Who can run for town office

Starting Jan 1, 2026, you must be a registered voter and have lived in Ashland City at least two years to run for Mayor or council. You must file a nominating petition with the county election commission as state law requires.

New ward and election rules

Starting Jan 1, 2026, Ashland City elects a Mayor at large and two council members in each of three wards. Elections are nonpartisan. The Mayor wins by the most votes townwide. In each ward, the top two candidates win. If candidates tie for Mayor, the council picks one to serve until the next election. If more than two council candidates tie in a ward, the council picks one. Elections are the first Thursday in August of even-numbered years. Terms begin at the first regular September meeting and last four years. One council seat per ward is elected every other year.

Vacancies and protection for incumbents

A mayor or council seat is vacant if the official resigns, dies, or moves out of the ward. It is also vacant after a conviction for malfeasance, misfeasance, a felony, a charter or state election law violation, or a crime of moral turpitude. A seat is vacant if the official misses all council meetings for 90 straight days without a valid reason. The law does not remove current officeholders early or cut their pay. Incumbents keep their current terms and salaries until those terms end.
