Easier to find family restrooms at rest areas

Beginning July 1, 2025, highway rest areas and welcome centers that already have a family restroom must be marked on nearby highway signs. A family restroom is a separate, fully enclosed, lockable restroom for people with disabilities, seniors, children, or anyone who needs help. The transportation department must also post online which locations have these restrooms. Signs and symbols must follow national traffic-control standards. The department may work with the Safety and Tourist Development departments on sign design and placement.

State transportation rules for restroom signs

The transportation department can make rules now to carry out the signs and website listings. It must use the state’s formal rulemaking process and may consult the Safety and Tourist Development departments. Most requirements start July 1, 2025.
